October, 2020 Update from the BFA:

NEW RULE REGARDING FUTURITY EXHIBITIONS

Please read carefully as this new rule can affect Futurity Horse eligibility for next year!

Exhibitions can not be taken DURING a competition race class (jackpots, rodeos, show and 4ds etc.). This will be considered a competition run prior to November 15th, eligibility rule.

For example... you are NOT ALLOWED to exhibition your futurity hopeful horse in a class or replace a drawn out entry with an exhibition during a class or jackpot.

Futurity and Derby Horses
1) can compete in any event EXCEPT barrels prior to the futurity year.
2) can only futurity a horse for one year - most people wait until they are 5 years old to futurity.
3) as of right now all Futurities in Canada are for horses 5 and under while the Derby is set for horses 7 and under.
** Each individual event will have specific rules in regards to the ages.

The Canadian Barrel Futurity organization is working to promote a greater number of long-standing Futurities & Derbies; this will provide trainers and barrel racers with quality events to compete at making it more worthwhile to prepare their young horses for competition.

Effort continues to be made to encourage significant added money in both Futurity and Derby competition. As well as the individual purses/awards each event offers, contestants vie for overall Futurity & Derby High Point Awards. Added money re. the various events is posted on this website in good faith, but Canadian Barrel Futurities is not in a legal position to guarantee event payouts.
